Rutgers Master Gardener Program

The Rutgers Master Gardeners are trained and certified volunteers who assist Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension personnel in providing horticulture information to the residents of Ocean County.

Ocean County Master Gardener Services Include:

Helpline - Lawn and garden questions are answered Monday through Friday, March through November, 9:00 a.m. to noon and December through February, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. at the Toms River office, (732-349-1245).

Ticks - free tick identification is available throughout the entire year at the Toms River office.

Diagnostics - free identification and diagnosis of plants and pest problems is provided. Recommendations are given. A representative sample of the problems is required for an accurate diagnosis.

Soil Testing - Two types of soil tests are available. A pH test to determine acidity or alkalinity is available for $3.00. Bring a cup of soil to the office for the pH test. A complete soil analysis kit , including pH, nutrients in the soil and recommendations, is also available. The fee is $15.00. It is not necessary to bring the soil to the office for this test.

Lectures - Our Speakers Bureau is available to speak on horticultural topics to community groups.

Community Outreach Programs - Volunteers are available to answer questions at Ocean County events held throughout the year.

Fall Garden Day - Fall Garden Day is held annually in late September or early October. Master Gardener speakers give lectures and demonstrations to help the Ocean County residents with winter preparation of their garden. General gardening questions are also answered.

Plant Sale - The annual Plant Sale is held the first Saturday in May, rain or shine, at the Agriculture Center in Toms River. Plants grown in the Master Gardener greenhouses and plants suitable for Ocean County conditions are available for purchase.
